I recently did the Quail Mountain Summit in Joshua Tree. It was a nice day hike, extra fun added by the high wind advisery that day. I suggest coming up from the south in Juniper Flats. I have done the hike from the Desert Quail Spring parking area through Johnny Lang Canyon as well. The Peak Register is in a 4″ diameter PVC tube, in a rock pile…[Read more]

Sherpa Sites goes into beta today! We’ve been working very hard to get this hosted blogging service out so take time to give it a look if you are considering your own blog or outdoor site. Sherpa Sites will launch to the public in early March.

Update: we’ve rebuilt the custom post templates (Trail Reports, Gear Reviews, Recipes) to have the ability to add some new functionality. It was a step back to take several forward. Of course, that delayed things a bit. The Marketplace will now be global so any products you add to your site will be visible there and an excerpt along with a title…[Read more]

Damn, we’re getting close to beta testing on Sherpa Sites. Pre-register now to save $$$: http://www.trailsherpa.com/. There’s no obligation so you can make the decision knowing you have a few month, maybe 6 months, beyond the initial free trial.

We’re getting closer. Ran into a problem yesterday with the Custom Post Templates. Those are the templated layouts for Trail Reports and Gear Reviews that you see on the Trail Sherpa site. We are trying to decide if they need to be redesigned or not. This is the last hurdle before we open up for beta testing. I’ll keep you updated.

http://www.mountain-forecast.com is a good resource for weather data when planning a hike to a summit. I have used it for Mt. San Gorgonio. Some of the features of the site include ten day forecast, detailed forecast at various elevations, freezing point altitude, and a mountain profile page with detailed information about the mountain. Tabs at the top…[Read more]

Jessica’s been spending a lot of time and energy on the first two custom themes for Sherpa Sites that will be responsive by design. That means that the content and layout will automatically adjust based on the size of the viewing device. The layout for an iPad is different than for a smartphone for instance. Here is a great tool for testing…[Read more]

We will be making a formal announcement on Wednesday for Sherpa Sites. The details are already on Trail Sherpa and we are inviting interested bloggers to pre-register. I think testing will last about 2 weeks which could give us a launch date around January 23rd.
In our traditional fashion, we have been leaking information about Sherpa Sites and…[Read more]

I received a StickPic for Xmas plus one to give away. If you haven’t checked them out you should. Cool piece of gear that will certainly come in handy. How should we give this one away?

I use a Garmin Oregon 450T and am happy with it except for the brightness of the display. I also just started using the Android App “Backcountry Navigator Pro” for my Motorola Droid X Android phone. That works great, and I love it (and it’s only $10), but my cell phone battery won’t last for a full day adventure. I’m considering the Solio…[Read more]
