I use a Garmin Oregon 450T and am happy with it except for the brightness of the display. I also just started using the Android App “Backcountry Navigator Pro” for my Motorola Droid X Android phone. That works great, and I love it (and it’s only $10), but my cell phone battery won’t last for a full day adventure. I’m considering the Solio…[Read more]

I use the Garmin 450T too and am quite happy with it. I haven’t used much else.

I have the Dakota and like it a lot, but I am finding that I carry it less and less these days. Thanks fr sharing those links Tim. I will certainly check them out.

Anyone using a widget for showing maps (tracks and waypoints) on their WordPress site? Does it work well? We’re thinking of building one as there seems to be a lack of good functional ones.

Tim, I’ve been using Trimble Outdoors. On most of our trail reports this year, there is a trail map that links out to the hike on Trimble with description, tracks, waypoints, and the ability to download gpx files and more. Here’s a great example of one: http://www.appalachiaandbeyond.com/2011/06/alice-and-rabbit-kephart-prong-trail.html

Yep. I’ve seen that one but don’t want to link out to another site.

Hard lesson learned. Before you get to the trail head make sure you put the batteries in your GPS!

I did that on the hike to Charleston Peak last year. The highest peak in southern NV. Not easy to do it again!

Anyone using the spot locator and is it worth the money?
