I am gearing up for my 2013 thru hike and I have a few questions for any of you who have completed a thru hike or simply from that area. What are the temperatures normally during mid to late march or even early April? What sleeping bag temperatures would you recommend as well as any suggestions on clothing etc would be very helpful. Also what…[Read more]

You are doing NOBO right? March and April through Georgia, TN, and VA can be anywhere from freezing to pleasant. It’s not unheard of to have anywhere from 3 – 10 inches of snow in the mountains nor is it unheard of to have 50 – 60 degree sunny days in the mountains in the early spring. It’s also not unheard of to have snow in the mountains in…[Read more]

I am doing a NOBO starting anytime between March 1 and Mid April. I have not set a date mostly due to trying to guess the weather. I am working on the layering part but I think having the right bag is a little more important than the clothes as those can be purchased last min. I hate being cold and would gladly shell out a few extra bucks for…[Read more]

I am planning a northbound thru hike in 2013 what is the best time to start to be able to finish before they close the trail and such for winter up north? I had planned on starting mid may is that to late?

      Adam,

Most people who thru hike the AT northbound usually start somewhere between mid March to Mid April. Anything later than that you will like miss peaking Katahdin. Of course starting so early, you’ll have to pack winter gear as there’s still chances for winter storms through May at that elevation.

Rather than setting a hard date I might look at starting as you suggested between mid March to mid April and base it purely on weather trends that are going on that spring. It is almost impossible to tell this far out. I think I would at least need a leave no later than x date do you agree?

Yes I would definitely have a leave no later than x date in your plan. You can also check out the Appalachia Trail Conservancy website. There’s tons of trail info there and planning resources too: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/
